Sharad Bobde

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde hails from Nagpur, Maharashtra. He is the son of legal luminary Arvind Bobde, who served as the advocate general of Maharashtra. He graduated with a B.A. from SFS College Nagpur in and completed his LL.B. from Dr Ambedkar College of Law, Nagpur University. He plays tennis, and was on the University College of Law team which won the inter-collegiate championship.

Justice Bobde enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978. He practiced at the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court for over 21 years. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1998.

Justice Bobde was then appointed as Additional Judge to the Bench of the Bombay High Court on 29th March, 2000. On 16 October 2012, he was appointed as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh. He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 12 April 2013. He is set to become the Chief Justice of India in 2019, after Justice Ranjan Gogoi, and will preside for 18 months

Notable Judgements

He is a part of the Bench at the Supreme Court which passed the order that no Indian citizen without an Aadhaar card can be deprived of basic services and government subsidies.

He is a part of the bench at the Supreme Court that upheld the ban by the Karnataka Government a book by Mate Mahadevi on the ground that it outraged the religious feelings of Lord Basavanna’s followers.

He was on the Bench at the Supreme Court with Chief Justice T. S. Thakur and Justice A. K. Sikri which passed an order banning the sale and stocking of all kinds of firecrackers, as well as a halt in the issuing of fresh licenses for the same.

He was also a part of the Bench at the Supreme Court that rejected the plea by a woman to terminate her foetus afflicted with Down syndrome.
